Unusual Antique Pinchbeck Cameo Brooch

An exquisite, large antique brooch, set with a hand carved shell cameo.

The beautifully carved cameo panel depicts a female classical figure, atop a podium base, holding a crescent moon towards a rose,. Possibly an impression of the goddess Aphrodite, or Diana, with one breast exposed.

The cameo is complemented by the fitted frame, which curves and moulds around the natural contortions of the shell.

The frame itself has wonderful scrolling to the surround, and is likely Pinchbeck.

There are no identification marks, but based on the style and age, I would think this is an Italian cameo set in an English mount.

A magnificent piece of Victoriana, this would make a fine addition to any collection.

There is an historic repair towards the bottom of the shell, with a section of horn used to secure the shell. There is also a hairline crack towards the top of the cameo.
